It was always presumed that Qatar’s prinias were of the species Graceful Prinia (Prinia gracilis<\/em>). However, recent fieldwork – armed with an improved understanding of the distribution and identification of this genus – has so far found only Delicate Prinia (Prinia lepida<\/em>) in the Qatar Peninsula*. This, despite only Graceful Prinia being found in the adjacent island nation of Bahrain!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though the above image is far from ideal, the (just about) visible undertail pattern could be considered to favour Delicate Prinia. Caution is required in trying to identify the above individual bird from just this one image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, Askew states, “In the past year, we have also confirmed that Delicate, P. lepida carpenteri<\/em>, has colonized eastern and south-central Qatar (Andrews 2022), strengthening the possibility that that particular taxon, having spread westward out of the UAE, also occurs in Saudi near the border towns of Batha and Salwa. Further, birders in Qatar have long believed that P. gracilis hufufa<\/em>e also occurs in the small Gulf country, but this has only just been confirmed through a recording of a singing male from a suspected population in mangroves near Al Khor (Hollister 2022).”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
